How To Keep Bugs Out Of Your Garden

10 Ways to Get Rid of Boxelder Bugs

Boxelder bugs are common pests found in Canada and the United States that will enter structures in the fall to seek shelter. They emerge again in the spring to feed and lay eggs. The key to avoiding a boxelder bug infestation is prevention.

Residual Insecticide

A fast-acting insecticide should be sprayed on the exterior walls of the structure of the infestation. Also spray around attic vents, windows, doors and any other points of entry. Concentrate on the south and southwest sides of the structure. Boxelder bugs are less likely to be attracted to shady areas.

Seal Exterior Cracks

Find and seal as many exterior cracks in the infested structure as possible. Caulk all holes, cracks and crevices of exterior walls so that the bugs are less likely to find a way in.

Vacuum Cleaner

The quickest way to deal with a large infestation of boxelder bugs is to simply use the nozzle on your vacuum. Add some soapy water to the vacuum bag so they can't get away.

Seal Interior Entryways

An interior spray won't stop boxelder bugs from entering the house. Seal interior entryways including windows, door frames and baseboards.

Replace Electrical Outlets

Boxelder bugs removal is as simple as replacing an electrical cover. Remove the cover plate, seal it and replace it. Do the same to switch boxes, heating ducts and return air vents.

Soapy Water

Need a boxelder bugs home remedy? Mix a few drops of dish soap with water and spray directly at the boxelder bugs. The soapy water will clog the spiracle, which is where they take in oxygen.
